Volunteers

We all enjoy a party!

The Museum, Derwent Valley Visitor Centre and shop are staffed by members of the Volunteers Association.

The Volunteers Association contribute a variety of skills and interests and take on a variety of tasks under the leadership of the Manager.

Some welcome the public either as receptionists or guides in the museum. They aim to make the visitor experience as interesting and enjoyable as possible. Full training is given and volunteers learn how the DVVC is run by coming on duty with more experienced volunteers until they feel confident enough to begin duties on their own.

Volunteers also carry out duties such as cleaning and organising social events or school visits and maintenance.

Volunteers come from all walks of life but we find there is usually something for everyone. The volunteers hold a meeting once a month where they discuss new ideas and everyone has the opportunity to have their say. Each year the volunteers have an outing to a place of interest to get new ideas and further their knowledge of mills and cotton manufacturing. There is also a Christmas dinner.

Would you like to meet new people, become involved with history and heritage projects and use your skills and experience to help at the historic site of Strutt’s North Mill?

The mill museum has a wide range of exciting volunteering opportunities and would love to hear from you!

We are always happy to get extra help with giving guided tours and dealing with visitor enquiries at our shop and reception area , but we are currently especially on the lookout for people with graphic design  and photography expertise or help with DIY and site caretaking jobs.

If you would like to have a chat about volunteering at the mill, please call Natascha (the Manager) on 01773 880474 and leave a message if outside our opening hours.

One Response to Volunteers

  1. JAN SHEPPARD says:

Hi Matthew – a reply from a volunteer receptionist, weird…not really as you ask for replies, after being on holiday for a while I am looking forward to getting back behind the desk at reception as a volunteer receptionist, as spring is on its way..or it was when i was out walking this morning, snowdrops peeping through the soil, birds singing, it made me think, maybe i will use this to put out a plea for more volunteers to join us at the mill. Its a great way to spend a few hours, inside a beautiful building, steeped in history with a stunning view, on the banks of the river Derwent, near the beautiful Victorian river gardens.
You will meet lots of interesting people who come into the Mill , for help, advice and information as well as guided or self guided tours of the mill. And we all have a pleasant and enjoyable time there too. So come and join us as a volunteer its great
