Discovery Day Events at Strutt’s North Mill
by Tom Wyke
23rd October 2016
Sunday 23rd October is The Belper Mill Artists and Makers Fair. It will be running from inside The Fit Pit and outside Strutt’s North Mill from 11am-3pm, showcasing some great work from a collection of creatives from across Derbyshire.
In addition Strutt’s North Mill Museum will be open to the public for free of charge throughout the day (11am-4pm) with costumed volunteers guiding people around. It is an opportunity for people to drop into this unique building and explore more about Belper’s industrial past.
The day is also the launch of our new exhibition, which is showcasing some of the amazing craft work that has been completed over the previous 6 months through our Postcode Community Trust funded ‘Community Craft Project’. Community Groups from across Belper and beyond have been creating, among other things, a huge patchwork of windows with images of millworkers sewn on to them, entitled ‘Through the Windows’. This will be hung as a giant image of the North Mill within the museum.
Also in the new exhibition will be the entries from our recent ‘Wind the Bobbins Up’ competition. We challenged members of the public to come up with new and inventive ways of upcycling some of the museum’s hundreds of industrial wooden bobbins, turning them into products that are useful or fun, and will reflect the innovative industrial heritage of North Mill. The competition is open to all ages and abilities. With a first prize of £50 for the best overall design, it’s well worth entering before our Saturday 8th October deadline.
Finally there are heritage walks starting from the Mill, which will take you around the Belper during the day. So get yourself down to Strutt’s North Mill on Sunday 23rd October for all sorts of excitement.
