Saturday 11^th February 11.45am – 1.00pm Family spring-bulb planting of the flower borders at the North Mill – (FREE!)

Come and add some colour to the mill! Help our volunteers with the planting of spring bulbs and help make the entrance of the mill beautiful!

We will be re-planting the flower borders in front of the mill. Help us with the planting, have a free hot drink and biscuit and earn a voucher for reduced price admittance to the North Mill tours.

NB. Event subject to reasonable weather conditions. Please phone the mill to check beforehand.

Wednesday 15 February: 10.15am – 1pm Textile Workshop (1) (part of a series of 4 with same format, ie. kids activities, refreshments, etc.) (£6.50 per adult – children FREE!)

Come and learn how to make simple and beautiful textile creations (eg. brooches, hair decorations, garlands etc.) either for fashion or the home. Experienced crafts people will give demonstrations and help throughout the morning and you will take home your finished work.

Also included:

Free children’s craft workshop and Millie the Mouse Treasure Hunt in the mill (suitable for ages 5 -10 yrs.)
Light refreshments of tea/coffee cake and biscuits.

NB. Numbers for the textile workshops are restricted to 20 adults – in order to avoid disappointment please aim to book at least a week in advance by phoning the mill (leave a message with contact details).

Special Exhibition and Memory Collection 10th – 18th March

On Saturday 10th March at 10.30am there will be an exhibition of local pictures (not previously seen). There is also an invitation to anyone with memories (or artefacts) of the Strutt Mills to a Coffee Morning Workshop and FREE museum entry. The workshop will include recording of memories and identification of artefacts. This event is part of the English Tourism Week 10th-18th March. See English Tourism Week

Derwent Valley Mills ‘To Where it Begins’

During 2010 artists Matt and Rob Vale were commissioned to create a new video artwork, celebrating the beauty, history and variety of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. The piece follows a curious figure (Ella Vale) as she races through seasons, spaces, places and views along this fascinating and historic valley. Featuring music and words specially created for the artwork, this is a captivating and uplifting exploration of one of Derbyshire's more remarkable sites.

We all enjoy a party!

Would you like to meet new people, become involved with history and heritage projects and use your skills and experience to help at the historic site of Strutt’s North Mill?

The mill museum has a wide range of exciting volunteering opportunities and would love to hear from you!

The museum volunteer team is an active and welcoming group and is always looking to increase its members.

We are always happy to get extra help with giving guided tours and dealing with visitor enquiries at our shop and reception area , but we are currently especially on the lookout for people with graphic design and photography expertise or help with DIY and site caretaking jobs.

Buildings at Risk

Several important buildings including the North Mill in Belper have been put on the English Heritage At Risk register. The buildings include :-
- Belper North Mill
- Road archway and footbridge
- Horseshoe Weir

Derbyshire Record Office – temporary closure

The Derbyshire Record Office will be closed for 3 weeks between the 12th and 30th September 2011 so that work can begin on building a new extension. On 3rd October 2011, the DRO will reopen at the Creche Building, County Hall, Matlock where a limited service will be provided for 18 months or until the new extension is completed.

Award for Excellence
