Lying at the heart of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site, Strutt’s North Mill in Belper is the ideal place to start exploring this historic landscape on foot.
From the mills and factories nestling by the Derwent, to the cottages, chapels and schools provided for the millworkers, there’s historically significant landmarks around every corner. Furthermore, from the formal parks and gardens in and around the town centre, to the well-preserved 18th century rural valley landscape setting, Belper is a treasure chest of sights to discover and experience.
Thanks to a dedicated group of volunteers, carrying out research and developing alternative walking routes, Strutt’s North Mill offers a range of heritage walks. These walks range from short guided tours around the town centre to longer rambles into the countryside, but all include opportunities to see this area’s heritage as you’ve never seen it before.
You can download our Heritage Walks Leaflet to make sure you don’t miss out on our next heritage walk. Alternatively, why not pick up some other walk leaflets and books from our gift shop and tourist information in the Derwent Valley Visitor Centre, to help you take in all the sights of our impressive town. These include simple heritage walks with maps, as well as a guide to the Town Centre.
We have recently developed some Educational Trails to help children and families explore the museum and parts of Belper. These are on sale in our gift shop.
Another great way to explore Belper is to follow Beth's Poetry Trail around the town and discover beautiful words in surprising places. To download the guide please visit Beth's Poetry Trail
