The money, a Sharing Heritage grant, will go towards a new project at the mill: ‘Updating the displays -Telling the Right Stories’. This will see our museum displays brought bang up to date with new tales and fascinating objects from the local area.
We need your help to make sure that our new museum displays and exhibitions tell the right stories. That’s why we are asking for your mill related stories, photographs, objects and memories.
Whether it’s photos of a relative who worked at the mill, anecdotes about life in bygone Belper or poetry, artwork and video inspired by the imposing mills, then please get in touch.
We want to create a vibrant, living history of the town, its inhabitants and the vital role that Belper North Mill played in shaping the town.
Museum manager Sarah Skinner said: “It’s fantastic that we have been awarded this grant to refresh the museum and involve local people in bringing our stories up to date.
“We hope that our new displays will encourage more local people to visit the museum as well as help to bring more visitors to the town.
“In order to make our displays relevant, fresh and exciting we need local people’s help. We want to hear your stories about the mills and what life was really like working in them.
“We’re particularly keen to know more about the East Mill and the English Sewing Company and we’re also looking for objects that we can use in our new displays.
“We’d also love to know more about living in workers’ housing and the social side of life – what happened after clocking off? “
Vanessa Harber, Acting Head of the Heritage Lottery Fund East Midlands said: “Sharing Heritage is a wonderful opportunity for communities to delve into their local heritage and we are delighted to be able to offer this grant so that Belper North Mill Trust can embark on a real journey of discovery.
“Heritage means such different things to different people, and HLF’s funding offers a wealth of opportunities for groups to explore and celebrate what’s important to them in their area.”
